Acne Treatment Options

Acne is a very common condition. As such, we know a lot about it and there are many ways to treat it. Acne is caused by one of three things. The pores of your skin become clogged with dead skin, oil, or bacteria. Perhaps one of these factors is causing your acne, or all three are present and contributing to clogged pores. Dr. Sharon Horton from Advanced Dermatology and Mohs Surgery in Batavia, IL is an experienced dermatologist that will find the root cause of your acne and minimize or eliminate it.

What causes acne?

Acne has surprisingly little to do with lifestyle factors such as poor diet and hygiene. External factors may contribute to the development of acne, but it mostly has to do with genetics. The factors that lead to acne are:

  • Genetic predisposition: If your parents dealt with acne, you'll probably deal with it as well.
  • Hormones: You may notice more acne around the time of your period in women. For both men and women, acne generally gets worse in puberty when testosterone levels are at their peak.
  • Stress: This is also a hormonal factor due to increased levels of the hormone cortisol.
  • Frequently wearing hats and helmets: This will lead to clogged pores.
  • Air pollution and high humidity
  • Certain medications
  • Frequent contact with oil or grease: This may be from the regular use of greasy and oily personal care products or, for example, working in a restaurant where you routinely have contact with grease and frying oil.

What are treatment options for acne?

Acne can range in severity quite significantly, from a mild nuisance to an extremely painful condition. Your dermatologist in Batavia, IL will recommend treatment based on your unique situation and the severity of your acne. Some treatment options are:

  • Over the counter: Face creams and other topical ointments that are used for acne contain specific ingredients. These are salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, azelaic acid, sulfur and resorcinol, alcohol and acetone, and retinoids. Your dermatologist will recommend the best one for you to try.
  • Prescription medication: Both topical and oral antibiotics may be prescribed. Also, an oral or topical retinoid treatment that is stronger than what you can get over the counter is particularly effective in cases of severe acne. Spironolactone is another drug that is used to treat acne.
  • Steroids: Rarely used, steroids may be prescribed in cases where there is severe inflammation.
  • Chemical peels: This procedure uses gentle chemicals to remove the top layer of the skin. The new skin that grows underneath will be smoother and have noticeably less scarring.
