Get Control of Your Acne

Find out ways to treat and better manage acne breakouts.

Maintaining proper skincare, reducing stress, and staying hydrated are all simple, yet effective, ways to prevent pimples; however, even Acnewith the best efforts in place, you may still notice those red, angry bumps cropping up on your face, chest, back or other areas of the body. Fortunately, our dermatologist, Dr. Sharon Horton, has helped patients of all ages, from children to adults, get smoother, acne-free skin. Here are a few different ways in which we can treat acne here at our office in Batavia, IL.

Topical Medications

As you might imagine, many acne medications are designed to go directly on the skin. This is also known as a topical treatment. Of course, there are many topical acne medications on the market, both prescriptions and over-the-counter, and they all work a little differently based on the cause of your acne.

For example, some topical medications kill the bacteria on the surface of the skin that can lead to clogged pores and breakouts, while other topical medications prevent the skin from producing too much oil. Our dermatologist can help you determine which topical medication will work best for the type of acne you’re dealing with.

Systemic Medications

Sometimes medications that act on the whole body rather than ones that are just applied to an affected area are required in order to see effective results. If you are dealing with deep, painful nodules and cystic acne, then systemic medications may work best for you. Systemic medication may also work for you if you find that your breakouts correspond with hormone fluctuations (e.g. your menstrual cycle). Common systemic medications that treat acne include,

  • Antibiotics: to reduce inflammation and kill bacteria
  • Birth control pills: to manage hormones
  • Isotretinoin: a strong medication used only on severe and treatment-resistant acne

Other Acne Treatments

When you turn to a dermatologist here at our Batavia office, not only will you get medications to help tackle your acne, but we can also recommend other non-medicinal therapies to treat your acne, as well. Along with extracting certain cysts, blackheads, and whiteheads during your appointment, we may also recommend laser therapy or chemical peels, which can also be effective at treating acne symptoms.
