How a Dermatologist Can Help You With Your Warts

Warts are basically small areas of thickened, bumpy skin. They come in a variety of shapes, colors, and sizes, and are caused by HPV or human papillomaviruses. Warts could develop anywhere on your body, but typically appear on the face, feet, and hands. Fortunately, most warts don’t cause health issues or make people sick. However, if your warts bother you, your dermatologist here at the Advanced Dermatology and Mohs Surgery in Batavia, IL, Dr. Sharon Horton, can get rid of them.

Here, your dermatologist might recommend these treatments depending on your overall health, age, and the type of wart that you have:

  • Cryotherapy: Freezing the wart and removing it is an effective wart treatment for both children and adults.
  • Cantharidin: This is a solution that your dermatologist will apply to the wart. It will cause the wart to blister so that your dermatologist can clip it after a week or two.
  • Excision: This involves cutting out or excising the wart.

For warts that are more difficult to treat, your dermatologist in Batavia, IL, might suggest one of these treatments:

  • Chemical Peels: These are basically prescription-strength peeling medications such as glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and tretinoin that can exfoliate the wart aggressively.
  • Laser Therapy: This is usually an option for warts that don’t respond to more conservative treatments.
  • Immunotherapy: Basically, this involves using your own immune system to eliminate warts.
  • Bleomycin: This is an anti-cancer medication that can be injected into the wart.

Take note that in some cases, fresh warts could appear as quickly as old ones heal and typically occurs when the virus cells of an old wart get into your skin prior to effectively treating it. When this happens, new warts will grow around your old warts. To prevent this from happening, make sure to treat new warts that have developed as soon as you spot them.
